Welcome to Hands-On with ESA EarthCODE¶
EarthCODE is a strategic initiative by the European Space Agency (ESA) designed to support FAIR and Open Science practice in Earth System Science.
This AGILE 2026 workshop focuses on practical reuse of openly available ESA Earth Observation research data. You will learn how EarthCODE helps researchers discover, explore, access, and reuse data products and workflows through the Open Science Catalog and common open-source Python tools.
During the workshop, participants will:
Understand what EarthCODE is and why it matters for open EO research.
Browse the EarthCODE Open Science Catalog and identify reusable datasets and workflows.
Refresh STAC, data access, Xarray, Zarr, Dask, and Pangeo concepts.
Work through a guided analysis of burnt forest areas.
Explore additional data access examples, including SEASFIRE and Antarctica analysis-ready data cubes.
Pre-requirements for attendees: Bring a laptop and use the existing agile26-pangeo conda environment. The workshop assumes basic familiarity with Python and Jupyter notebooks. No package installation is part of the session.
